1000 Miles and over One Million Strides to
Brake the Cycle of Poverty
Hi. The 1000 mile journey/adventure continues as I continue to stride towards my goal of 38 marathons dedicated to the 37+ million US citizens living in the poverty condition. Since September 2006, I have been blessed to be able to complete 31 marathons and God willingly, I will be at the 842.8 mile mark on the 1000 mile journey with the next completed marathon. Thank you once again for your continued support of my Taking Strides to Brake the Cycle of Poverty marathon initiative. While I truly appreciate all of your support and best wishes on each marathon attempted and completed and your financial support of the five groups that I have designated for fundraising purposes (Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Cornerstone Foundation, Holy Family Home and Shelter, Back on My Feet, and the City of New Orleans Recreation Department), I hope that you have become more engaged in your own communities, just as I continue to challenge myself to do, to make a positive difference in addressing the poverty condition. It is my belief that all of our efforts, big and small, through the giving of our time, talents, and or money, make a positive difference and help people ‘Brake the Cycle of Poverty’
Through this initiative, I have raised $8281.00 collectively for the different groups. While the amount is not big in the annals of fundraising (fundraising is definitely not one of my strengths), I hope that my efforts have made a positive difference in the lives of people that are the recipients of the assistance and services provided by the respective programs. Most importantly, I hope this initiative has increased your awareness of the poverty condition at the federal, state, and local level and inspired you to act. In addition to the marathon running, I visited the offices of Connecticut’s US Federal representatives while in Washington the last two springs to advocate on behalf of the people living in the poverty condition and participated in the 6 th annual Brake the Cycle of Poverty Bicycle trip in June.
As done in previous years, I continue to encourage you to THINK ABOUT IT, TALK ABOUT IT, and TAKE ACTION against poverty as I attempt to run 1000 miles (995.6 miles officially through the marathons – I’ve counted the Manchester Road Race (4.748 miles) to get over the 1000 mark J) and take over One Million Strides to help Brake the Cycle of Poverty. In addition, you might consider the following:
- Invite me to speak to you and your group on the poverty condition in the US
- Become an advocate for people living in the poverty condition
- Educate yourself about the impact of poverty in your community
- Get beyond the statistics and donate your time and unique talent(s) to make a positive difference
- Donate financially to one or more of the five groups that I have identified that provide a Hand-up to people in need to help people Brake the Cycle of Poverty. Please note that all donations will go directly to the organization and will not cover any expenses related to the runs.
These groups include the:
Back on My Feet: "Back on My Feet is a non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of Philadelphia's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem." http://backonmyfeet.org/main/index.html Donations directed towards Back on My Feet can be done online at http://www.active.com/donate/backonmyfeet/BraketheCycleofPover ($2980.00 raised to date)
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development. (CCHD). The CCHD is the domestic, anti-poverty program of the Catholic Church in the US ( http://www.usccb.org/cchd/mission.shtml ). The mission of the CCHD is to, "address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education". It provides seed money that enables and empowers groups of people to work their way out of poverty in sustainable ways and to stay out of it. ($3186.00 raised to date)
The Cornerstone Foundation Inc. is located in the Vernon/Rockville community where I live. It "is a non-profit ecumenical outreach organization. It is a safe, non-threatening atmosphere where one can be listened to, affirmed, and encouraged. Our primary endeavor is to improve the quality of life among the people we serve. We are committed to a set of values and objectives which we believe are essential to achieving our mission and realizing our vision." ( http://www.cornerstone-rockville.org ($955.00 raised to date)
The Holy Family Home and Shelter Inc . is located in Willimantic, CT where I work. It is "operated by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady Mother of the Church, endeavors to serve those families whose circumstances have deprived them of adequate living and housing. The Home and Shelter does not seek to pass judgment on any person, but to serve in a Christ-like manner families in need of the Shelter's facilities. The Home offers them a safe harbor while helping them to find solutions to alleviate their own situation in-so-far as these persons are willing and capable of living in harmony with others while respecting their mutual rights." http://www.holyfamilywillimantic.org/ ($590.00 raised to date)
The New Orleans Recreation Department. As many of you know, I visited New Orleans with my students in February 2007 (and again in 2008) and assisted in the recovery efforts. The initial trip had a significant impact on the group and left a desire to continue to assist when possible. After reading an article in Sports Illustrated in the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I was struck by the piece of the article that highlighted the devastating impact the storm and its aftermath had on the New Orleans Recreation Department. It noted how the services provided by the Recreation Department are vital to the residents living in poverty. As I am a professional in the field of Sport and Leisure Management and an advocate for people impacted by poverty, the chance to assist the New Orleans Recreation Department in its recovery seemed like a great opportunity. ($570.00 raised to date)
If interested in making an initial or additional donation to one or more of the groups, please write the check out to the specific group and mail it to me at the address below and I will forward it to the organization. Feel free to contact me at (860) 872-0081 or by e-mail at charliechatterton@sbcglobal.net if you have any questions or would just like to say hello as it would be great to speak with you. Thank you once again for all of your support and God Bless always!!!
